How to have beautiful newborn photos without needing to leave your home

The first few weeks at home with a newborn can feel like a bit of a blur. Day and night blend into one, with the baby feeding around the clock. You feel like you just move from the couch to the bed and back. On repeat. The effort of getting out of the house can feel huge. A walk with the pram for a coffee is a big milestone, some fresh air and a feeling of achievement for the day. So, for many of us, the thought of bundling everyone into a car, to get photos taken at a studio, can be a bit daunting.

This is the beauty of in-home newborn photography sessions. But if you’re worried about turning your home into a studio, please don’t fret. Here are some of my biggest tips on preparing for your session:

1.     Do a basic tidy up. You don’t need to scrub the floors or tidy everything away. The main area we photograph will most likely be the main bedroom. So, I advise – make your bed, and remove any clutter from the bedside tables. Then, as I shoot, if I notice any clutter in shots, I’ll just do a quick re-arrange. I don’t expect you to have a pristine home – I have been there myself and completely understand.

2.     Keep your home warm. We ideally want sleepy photos of your baby – this makes for some super sweet shots. And we may get some photos in just a little singlet. So a nice warm home will keep baby comfortable and sleepy.

3.     Aim to feed your baby just before I arrive. This helps keep them sleepy and relaxed. Though please know, we take our time, and if you need to feed your baby during the session this is totally fine (and I can take some breastfeeding or bottle feeding photos for you if you would like).

Otherwise, leave the rest to me! I will find the best light in your home. And we can really capture the story of your family in these days. In your home and in your yard, as you adjust to this new world and get to know this little person.
