Melbourne Sunset Family Photography - The Mackies

What’s the best time of day for outdoor family photos? Without a doubt, it is during the ‘golden hour’, which is around 1 hour after sunrise, or 1 hour before sunset. At this time of day we have a soft light, with the beautiful back glow of the sun. This is especially important for beach photos, as there usually isn’t much shade!

If you are thinking of having family photos around Melbourne, but worried about keeping the kids up late during witching hour, I have a few suggestions:

  • If you can, push their naps back later in the day. This may buy you an extra hour into the evening.

  • Keep the day quiet and relaxed. If possible, avoid childcare days, or big day trips to the zoo or beach.

  • Bring bribes! Snacks are vital to keep kids happy!

Be assured that my family sessions are led by your kids. I let them run and play and be themselves. Sessions are full of cuddles and play! And remember that it’s just one night of keeping them up late!

If the thought of keeping your kids up late still gives you the heebie-jeebies, there are some other options:

  • We can wait until day light savings is over. Autumn is a beautiful time of year in Melbourne. And if you’re worried about the weather, if it’s raining we just reschedule!

  • Book in for an indoor family session. I love capturing families in their home, and we can do any time during the day!

  • Early morning in a park! We won’t get that beautiful golden glow, but if we pick a lovely shady park location, we can still capture some beautiful family moments in the early hours :)

If you would like to book in for a family photography session, please get in touch here.
